Problems Facing Our Community

  • Salem’s net loss of jobs over the past several year
  • Loss of important businesses from City :  Child Craft, Pamida, Links Handle
  • Uncertain Future of Local Factories:  Techumseh, GKN, Flexcel, Kimball
  • Migration of young people out of our community
  • General lack of good paying jobs
  • Over 400 properties for sale in Washington Co.
  • Inadequate infrastructure to accommodate larger manufacturing companies

Think about this…
The Illinois Chamber of Commerce did a study that shows that 100 new manufacturing jobs in a community lead to:

  • 415 more Jobs
  • $12,700,000 more Personal income per year
  • $5,000,000 more in Bank deposits
  • 7 additional Retail Establishments
  • $7,700,000 more in Retail Sales
  • $540,000 increased tax revenue
  • $2,000,000 more service industry receipts

Thinking outside the Box could lead us into a new Era of Economic Renewal. We need fresh, new ideas and innovative thinking by the best resources Salem and Washington County have to offer.  I believe by marketing ourselves to businesses and making our city more business friendly, we can begin the economic healing that this community so desperately needs. Energy and Technology companies are bringing us the newest cutting edge technology and also the most new jobs. Small businesses and New Start up businesses account for 80% of the new jobs created in America. With an outstanding opportunity available in the form of Helsel Commerce Center, our community needs to develop a business incubator to attract and develop new businesses.
